Your Skin As You Age (the science)
As skin ages, it experiences a natural slowing of the processes that help maintain youthful qualities such as firmness, tautness, and radiance. Visible signs of aging, such as spots, fine lines, and wrinkles, appear due to the skin's defense mechanisms and a reduction in cell renewal, turnover, activity, and recovery.
Our skin begins to age from the moment we are born, but we typically don't recognize the signs of aging until we notice dullness, spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and a loose, crepey texture. The causes of these visible signs are complex and vary depending on genetics and exposure to lifestyle and environmental factors. While nobody can turn back the clock, a good skincare routine and a little help from science can certainly help us appear to have done just that!
Age 20
Unhealthy lifestyle habits, environmental damage and constant UV exposure begin to compromise skin's structural integrity. Our cell defences start to weaken in the face of free radicals and our ability to fight off skin damage starts to decline. Cell renewal and turnover rates naturally start to slow, diminishing skin radiance.
Age 30
Collagen (which keeps skin firm) and elastin (which gives skin its bounce) degrade, resulting in visible wrinkles. Cell renewal and turnover continue to decline, leading to a duller complexion and uneven skin tone. Some cells can become inactive giving rise to damaging inflammatory toxins that accelerate the appearance of skin aging.
Age 40
Skin appears thinner and its naturally-protective barrier lipids are not as pronounced. Dehydration can be an issue.
Depending on hormonal activity, unusual activity may appear in skin from uneven skin tone to adult acne.
More prominent signs of skin aging can also appear, such as dark spots and significant dullness.
Age 50
Our barrier lipid layer lessens, leading to less efficient moisture retention and more potential for sensitivity and dehydration.
Chronic stress and inflammation both inside and outside of the body delays skin recovery leading to lasting marks and longer healing times. By now, skin can show prominent wrinkles, fine lines and discolouration.
